The final analysis paper is due by email on November 26, 2007, not later than 9:00 a.m. Late submissions will be accepted, albeit with a deduction of one letter grade per day late.
The Honor Code will be strictly enforced. There will be no "second chances," no "Can I call this a draft?," no "do-overs," and no "I didn't think the Honor Code would be used for this class" excuses. Cite properly using any consistent style you wish. Consult the Writing Center for help writing your paper. Spelling counts. Grammar counts. Quality counts. Integrity counts. Avoid the common errors seen repeatedly this semester: poor citations, weak references (Wikipedia and other encyclopedias are not allowed), spelling errors, problems with possessives, problems with subject-verb agreement, problems with awkwardness. Errors repeated from past analysis papers will be graded more severely, so learn from your previous mistakes.
Write your paper using OpenOffice, saving it as either an OpenOffice document or exported as a .pdf. Either format is acceptable.
Your paper will have four sections plus a reference list:
I: An analysis of the pre- and post-class results for Mrs. C. Use the medical and physical test results, commenting on what went well, what didn't go well, a detailed defense of your position, what you would do differently if you had the chance. I highly recommend that you consult with a professional in the field to answer any questions you have. Be sure to properly cite your consultations.
II: An analysis of the pre- and post-class results for Dr. H. Use the medical and physical test results, commenting on what went well, what didn't go well, a detailed defense of your position, what you would do differently if you had the chance. I highly recommend that you consult with a professional in the field to answer any questions you have. Be sure to properly cite your consultations. In my case, you should determine how much of the change seen on the medical report is due to medications and how much is due to your work.
III: A week-by-week critique of your contributions to the project for both Mrs. C and Dr. H. This section should have 10 sub-sections, each labeled Week 1, Week 2, ..., Week 10, in which you detail exactly what you did during the term.
IV. A detailed explanation of what you learned this semester in this class. Include a detailed discussion of how the group dynamics affected the class' progress as well as how the group's efforts could have been improved. Don't forget to discuss what you learned related to my kidney condition. The class was about "real-world" learning -- tell me what you learned and how you learned it.
There is no page limit on this final analysis paper. Use double-spacing. Email your work to me when your final version is complete. Be your own worst critic. Grades will be posted to Banner Web during the week of Final Exams, and not before that time.

Dr. H - Diet and Workout for 11/15/07
Breakfast was a bowl of Life cereal with the morning coffee. Lunch was a tuna sub on whole wheat with lettuce, olives, green peppers, tomatoes. Dinner was two tacos, 1/4c white rice, 1/4c fat-free refried beans.
The soreness from Wednesday's workout is starting to kick in, and by Friday morning, it's really, really sore. I took Thursday off for a rest day, and this afternoon I'll be back in the woods for a tune-up ride before Saturday.

mile run test
I just wanted to say.... CONGRATULATIONS!!! Mrs. C and Dr. H did amazing on their runs today! Before Mrs. C did hers she didnt' think she could make it under 13:30, but to her suprise she made her mile run 11:19 which is amazing! That is such a big improvement from the beginning of the year, when she could only run a half a mile so good job Mrs. C!!!! We also found out tonight that the reason why she hasn't been losing much weight is because her thyroid isn't functioning properly; therefore, she is unable to lose weight easily.
Dr. H wanted to get his mile run under 6 minutes and he did and he had his whole family there to cheer him on! I'm sure he was in a lot of pain, but stef and I pushed him through it on the last two laps and he ended up making his mile in 5:59... awesome job Dr. H!!!
See you all tomorrow for the 100 yd. test!

Physical Testing
Tonight was a HUGE success!
Mrs. Carbonneau ran her mile in 11:20ish? I think? Renee had the time so she'll have to post it later. But - that was a HUGE improvement. Before she began she said she might not make it faster than 13:30 and she, along with the rest of us, were pleasantly surprised. Awesome job tonight Mrs. C.
Dr. Harshaw ran his mile in 5:59.55. An awesome, awesome time. He couldn't really breathe afterwards, but Renee and I are sure he's very excited.
Great job tonight guys. How does 5:00pm at the practice football fields sound? 110 yards = 100 meters...I think Coach is getting frustrtated at having to unlock the gate all the time.
Let me know by e-mail.
Again. Great job.

Mrs. C's workout for 11/8
Mrs. C had an easy workout on Thursday. We first started with the push up and situp test. She completed 39 push ups and 26 situps. We then had an easy leg workout that ended with a 5 minute cool down. Mrs. C is done with workouts. Congrats!
Dr. Harshaw's Workout 11/7
Dr. Harshaw had a hard workout today. We first started with the physical test of pushups and situps. He completed 64 pushups and we lost count of the situps so he will complete them later. We had a lower body workout and it lasted for 35 minutes. Dr. Harshaw forgot his watch so we don't know how many calories he lost. Congrats on being finished with workouts.
Medical Test -- Early Results and Comments
I had the post-class physical this morning, along with another blood test and urine test. The early results are all quite good. The only value that is out of place is the resting heart rate, and I'm sure it's elevated higher than you saw on my earlier plot simply due to the fatigue that I'm feeling right now after Saturday's race. I've asked for the blood test results from the Vampires to be faxed to me as soon as they are available.
Here are the numbers that I have thus far:
BP: 118/76
Weight: 171
Urine Test: All Clear! No blood in this sample at all, but I was told that the condition will come and go from time to time.
Resting HR: 56 (As I mentioned, I'm insanely tired right now from Saturday, and once I recover, I'll bet this will get back down to my normal 41 or so.)
I asked some questions for us all. Here are the answers:
Q: What's going on with the ache in this left shoulder?
A: Most likely I've aggravated it due to the heavy lifting, and it's not anything to worry about unless it doesn't go away. Recommended that I lighten up on the weights.
Q: If a CT scan with IV contrast was needed, why didn't we do that in the first place?
A: I don't know -- could have been a mistake on the order for the scan. There are some scans that are better without contrast (searching for symptoms of a stroke, for instance) but in this case we were looking for stones.
Q: What's with the pain in my left ankle?
A: This is a tendon that is getting irritated. Recommended that I take a couple of Advil prior to the mile run, be extra sure that I am properly hydrated in advance of the run, and maybe consider focusing on riding thereafter.
Q: Based on the research about sleep quality and Zocor (along with the $4 generics available at WalMart), can we consider an alternative as a cholesterol-reducing drug?
A: Sure. But if the cholesterol is not significantly down with the prevastatin, then I'll be going back to Zocor. I fall asleep really fast...really fast...but tend to wake up 3-4 times a night. This symptom make be more associated with my being sleep-deprived than due to the medication.
Q: Can I have beef ever again?
A: If the cholesterol numbers are appropriate, then I can have beef 1-2 times per week. I need to see what the blood test results indicate.

Harrisburg Half, Race #2
Yesterday's race was pretty much outstanding. On the first three laps, I was hanging in really well with the leader (one of the Pro Health Insurance team riders), and I watched how he was having some difficulty on the singletrack descent. The two of us had initiated a gap from the other riders on each climb and I was feeling really strong. I took over the lead on the start of the fourth lap, and pushed the pace just a little bit in the singletrack to test him out. At the base of the descent, I had a small gap that I pushed even bigger on the clear-cut field section before the climb. In two laps, the gap to second grew to 40 seconds, and I held that gap for the next 7-8 laps. With about 15 minutes to go I started getting worried about making mistakes hitting my marks in the dark. The light is good and all, but when you get tired, it's really hard to maintain the speed and the control. I backed off for the last 4 laps just enough to hold onto the lead by 9 seconds. Once I got out of the dangerous section (one of the other riders broke his wrist on a crash in our class last night -- that was pretty gruesome to see), I put the hammer down for the finish. It's been a lot of years since I've had a win, and this one was a hard fought effort. It's also my first win on dirt.
Right after the finish I started yacking for the next five minutes or so, and I'm really glad there wasn't anything on my stomach except for a PowerBar and some Gatorade. At least this time it was real Gatorade and not the fashion-conscious look-alike. Both quads were on the verge of cramping afterwards, but thankfully that didn't happen.
The power conditioning that you guys have done for me has been a huge factor in the success as has the diet. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I thought you all would like to share in the successful weekend with me, so I'm throwing a bonus of 10 points onto my side of the Quantifiable Results section of the grading for the semester. Nice work! If you have any questions about that, drop me a note. Your work with me has put me in position to be tied for first overall in the series, and you deserve some credit for it. Thanks to the Harrell's Bicycle World racing team for the support and training at Harbison, and thanks to you guys for all the help with the workouts and the diet. You did really well. Whatever the mile time and the 100-yd sprint times are, this result means a huge deal to me.
Total calories: 1188
Tomorrow is the medical test at the doctor's office. As soon as I get the results faxed to me, I'll let you know, so you can pick up a copy. Watch the blog for details about the final analysis paper.
